The University Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1962. This initiative was taken by Pieter De Somer, who later became rector as well as by a group of professors who wanted to see the actualisation of a concrete music culture at the university. The main promoters were professor P. Huyskens and the conductor, L. Weemaels, honorary director of the Music Conservatory of Louvain and founding member of Jeugd en Muziek (Youth and Music). The USO grew rapidly to a full-fledged symphony orchestra and boasts presently more than 70 musicians. Many prominent soloists have already performed with the USO. Several of the soloists have been successful candidates of the well known and respected Queen Elizabeth competition. The concert tour at the beginning of the academic year has over the years become a tradition. In 1989 as part of a cultural exchange program, the orchestra was invited by the student orchestras of Leiden, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The following years the USO performed in Germany, the Czech Republic, Great Britain, France, Austria, Spanish Basque country, Luxemburg, Hungary, Denmark, Bologna, Friesland. In the second semester the orchestra hosts its “March concerts” performing in Louvain and in several major cities in Belgium. Renier Janssens and Jan Van Bouwel were respectively the first conductors of the USO. After the later died, Louis Weemaels became the new conductor. In 1983 the orchestra was under the direction of Mauritz Goossens. Aften ten years of Mauritz Goosens conducting the orchestra, Piet Swerts took over. Geert Soenen followed and worked with the orchestra until December of 1995. Etienne Siebens conducted the orchestra until March 1997 and brought it up to a higher level. The orchestra continues to perform at this quality level under the present conductor, Edmond Saveniers. This is not all you can find about this orchestra.
